Using Music to Create a Sonic Haven: Music and Dementia

Registration is closed for this event
Using anecdotes and live musical examples, this webinar will provide some background on how Claire’s experience as a baroque cellist has informed her work as a therapeutic musician with people living with dementia. She will also discuss the ways in which baroque music has specifically been used in medical settings – including with people who are living with dementia.

Claire Garabedian has been a professional cellist specialising in historical performance for many decades. Until moving to Scotland in 2007, Claire played with many of top music ensembles and musicians in the USA, including Philharmonia Baroque, Seattle Baroque, Portland Baroque, American Bach Soloists, Vancouver Baroque, Boston Baroque, and the Handel & Haydn Society. Since moving to the UK, she has continued performing with major ensembles including the Dunedin Consort.  She is also a certified therapeutic musician (USA-https://www.mhtp.org/). In 2015 Claire successfully completed a doctoral studentship focusing how music can be effectively harnessed as a catalyst for engagement and connection between people living with dementia and family, friends, and staff. She has found that music can generate connections and parity among all who are present. This is an especially important lesson for musicians to be mindful of, as we are blessed with a unique task – to reach out, touch, and connect those who’ve graced us with their time and their willingness to listen. Claire has enjoyed sharing her knowledge and experiences on throughout the UK and USA, including at the Hay Literature Festival (Wales, UK) and on BBC Radio 4 (Saturday Live).
