College-Level Ensemble Development Grant
Early Music America offers grants annually to college or university Early Music Ensembles to support a specific project or event that will enrich or broaden the educational experience of the students, and/or help to elevate the profile of such ensembles on campus, in their community or nationally.
Case-Western Reserve University Baroque Chamber and Dance Ensembles

Building on their work in Baroque theatrical gesture supported in part by an EMA College-Level Ensemble Development Grant in 2014 that funded a collaboration with Jed Wentz, CWRU's project will invite Professor Guy Spielmann, an expert on early-modern comic acting and gesture, and his partner, a renowned mime, to present a workshop that leads to a public performance of a pièce par écriteaux (poster play) from 1711 entitled Apollon à la foire.
Texas Tech University Early Music Ensemble

Texas Tech University will use the development grant money to bring Bob Wiemken (of Piffaro) to teach the new "TTU Loud Band" for four days.

- one or more performances around a given theme or focusing on a specific repertory
- a symposium uniting performers and scholars in a given field
- bringing in one or more outside experts for workshops or masterclasses
- salaries or other payments to faculty and staff at the awardee’s institution
- fees or expenses of members of a professional ensemble with which the applicant is directly associated
- the purchase of musical instruments (although the costs of any short-term loan of them might be considered appropriate)
- educational and other benefits
- meshing with the ensemble’s mission and institutional context
- innovative approach to performance, repertory, and/or curricular goals
- potential for longer-term impact within the institution and/or in the field
- feasibility and creativity of the project
- Applicants must be directors or the equivalent of college or university early music ensembles from institutions in the US or Canada. Although, the term "early music" is used in different ways at different institutions, for purposes of this award it denotes an ensemble that fits the following criteria: -The ensemble devotes its attention primarily to music before ca. 1750. -The ensemble gives attention to matters of historical performance. -Where instrumental performance is involved, the ensemble performs on period instruments OR is working towards the goal of using them.
- The majority of participants in the ensemble must be students enrolled in a degree program at the ensemble’s home institution. The ensemble may include non-student community participants and/or faculty members as long as they constitute fewer than one-third of the members of the ensemble.
- The applicant or associated institution must be a current member of EMA BEFORE applying. Individual applicants must possess either an individual, senior, student, household or international membership level. Institutional applicants must possess an organization membership level on behalf of the institution they are applying for.
- EMA Board members and EMA staff are not eligible to apply.
- All funds must be used in the 2017 - 2018 school year.
JudgingApplications are reviewed by an anonymous panel of judges and award announcements will be made by mid-May.
AwardTwo winners will each receive a $1,000 grant in support of the project described in their application.
