THE APPLICATION PROCESS

Eligible Applicants

Applications are open to high school, undergraduate, or graduate students. Students must be enrolled full-time during the spring term of the application deadline.

Both Level 1 & 2 scholarships must support attendance at early music workshops in the United States and Canada only.

Students do not have to be members of EMA in order to apply.

There are two types of scholarships offered for summer workshops:

Level 1 Scholarships:

For students seeking to develop skills and gain experience in early music performance, typically as part of a broader musical education.

Required Materials: (Level 1)
  1. Contact information.
  2. Education information.
  3. Workshop information.
  4. A brief essay in which you describe your musical background, your specific experience with early music, and how the further exploration of early music performance will enhance your development as a musician. Word Limit: 300 Min 500 Max
  5. Two letters of recommendation, one from a teacher who can comment on your experience in early music, and one from a principal music teacher who can comment on your work more broadly, both signed and attached as a PDF.
  6. A 5-minute unedited audio file, demonstrating your early music performance skill.
  7. The list of work(s) performed in #6.

Level 2 Scholarships:

For advanced students already experienced in the study and performance of early music, typically aspiring to a professional level of attainment.

Required Materials: (Level 2)
  1. Contact information.
  2. Education information.
  3. Workshop information.
  4. A brief essay in which you describe your background in early music performance, your specific goals as an early music performer, and how the scholarship and workshop will help you attain them. Word Limit: 300 Max
  5. One letter of recommendation from a professional early music teacher, signed and attached as a PDF.
  6. A total of 15 minutes of audio and/or video file, demonstrating your early music performance skills. The file(s) must be unedited, preferably from a live performance (with applause deleted), and can include up to 5 short selections in which you are the featured performer.
  7. The list of work(s) performed in #6.

Students can submit an application for more than one workshop. If you are applying for multiple workshops, you must submit a separate application for each workshop.

Students must choose either Level 1 or Level 2 when applying for each workshop. Students are not eligible to submit the same workshop application for both levels.
