A Bright Light of French Baroque
January 16 @ 8:00 am - 11:30 pm MST
One event on January 18, 2022 at 8:00 am
Exquisite chamber music from one of the bright stars of the French Baroque, Elisabeth Jacquet de la Guerre, featuring an early violin sonata in A minor unpublished in her lifetime, with Cynthia Miller Freivogel violin; Katherine Heater, harpsichord and Sandra Miller, viola da gamba. This virtual concert is streaming on demand throughout January, 2022. (A ticket also includes a Festive French Noëls virtual concert.)
“The violin sonatas of Elisabeth Jacquet de la Guerre were introduced to me while I was working with Brandywine Baroque by the artistic director and harpsichordist Karen Flint. While de la Guerre was famous in her time, her work was neglected until recently. Flint, herself a remarkable woman, was an early champion of Jacquet de la Guerre’s works.
“The six sonatas of Jacquet de la Guerre stand up compositionally to any of the repertoire of the early 18th century as serious and fully developed works. When I bought the complete set, it came with an appendix of sketches from earlier sonatas. This kind of manuscript gives us a window into her artistic and compositional process. For me to really inhabit a score, I need to perform it. So I thought it was nice to add a few movements from this earlier manuscript to our performance as a way of better getting to know her work. As far as I know, no one has previously recorded anything from that particular source.” C. Freivogel
