Abendmusik: Splendors of the German Baroque

January 10 @ 7:30 pm - 9:00 pm CST

Free

Described by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution as a dignified and beautiful singer, bass-baritone Paul Max Tipton enjoys an internationally renowned career in opera, oratorio, and chamber music, performing and recording throughout North America, Europe, and Asia. He makes a rare solo appearance in Chicago with this recital of virtuosic works for voice and instruments from 17th century Germany.

Inspired by Dieterich Buxtehude’s popular “Abendmusik” concert series, which brought music lovers from near and far to St. Mary’s Church in Lübeck—including a young J.S. Bach, who purportedly made the nearly 250 mile trek on foot—this program includes music by Buxtehude, Nicolaus Bruhns, Heinrich Ignaz Biber, Johannes Schenck, Heinrich Schütz, and others. Joining Paul Max Tipton are three acclaimed musicians from all over North America: Montreal-based baroque violinist Sallynee Amawat, New York City-based cellist and viola da gamba player Matt Zucker, and Ars Musica Chicago’s artistic director, harpsichordist Jason J. Moy.

Admission is FREE; a free-will offering will be collected at the conclusion of the performance.
