ala pifarescha: Early Double Reed and Sackbut Workshop
March 5 @ 5:00 pm - March 12 @ 1:00 pm ESTSee registration link for details.
We are pleased to announce the new identity of the Indiana Early Double Reed Workshop and Indiana Sackbut Workshop as one entity, “ala pifarescha: Early Double Reed and Sackbut Workshop,” sponsored by Piffaro, the Renaissance Band.
This year’s workshop will (re-)visit our favorite manuscript and print sources for wind band from the 15th, 16th, and 17th centuries. Our guiding question for the week will be, what can the notation of a composition tell us? With this question in mind, we’ll pay close attention to the layout, clefs, mensuration signs, note and rest values, ligatures, accidentals (or lack thereof!) dots, smudges, crossed-out passages, and any other marks on the page that could give us indications about performance practice. Reading from parts, as opposed to a score, will also be an invitation to rely more closely on our ears than our eyes. Although historical notation is the hero and central focus of this workshop, selections from all the sources will be provided in both original and modern notation.
The workshop will run from Sunday March 5 at 5 PM to Sunday, March 12 at 1 PM at Waycross Camp & Conference Center in Morgantown, IN. As in the past, the workshop will begin with Dulcian Days where dulcians, racketts, and sackbuts meet from Sunday evening until Wednesday early afternoon and focus on 16th- and 17th-century music. The shawms will join us on Wednesday late afternoon for the remainder of the week, leading us towards earlier repertoire of the 16th and 15th centuries.
For all workshop and room and board options and fees, please visit the registration website by clicking on the link below.
We hope you can join us for this week-long Renaissance notation retreat!
