Arizona Early Music presents: Ars Lyrica Houston, Crossing Borders
January 22, 2023 @ 3:00 pm - 5:00 pm MST$30.00
Crossing Borders: Music of 17th- and 18th-century Latin America
Featuring: Camille Ortiz, soprano, and Cecilia Duarte, mezzo-soprano
Crossing Borders explores a crucial moment in the musical history of the New World, when European musical traditions began to mingle with indigenous musical practices. This festive program includes villancicos and romances for voices and ensemble plus instrumental works drawn from the rich repertoire of 17th- and 18th-century colonial and Latin American cultures. Musical selections by Juan del Encina, Joseph Pérez, José Durán, Sebastián Durón, Antonio de Salazar, Juan de Araujo, Manuel Joseph Quiroz, and others illustrate the multiple and creative ways that music traverses cultural and national borders.
About Ars Lyrica Houston
Ars Lyrica Houston specializes in music from the Baroque era, the “golden age” of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, as performed on period instruments with careful attention to historical style and context. Founded in Houston in 1998 by harpsichordist and conductor Matthew Dirst, this Grammy-nominated ensemble provides audiences with world-class performances of a wide range of dramatic, sacred, and chamber works.
Presented with the generous support of the Tucson Desert Song Festival.
