Ave Maria: Plainsong propers of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary

August 14 @ 6:15 pm - 7:00 pm EDT

Free

Visiting choral scholars from Canada and Australia sing the Gregorian propers in Assumptione Beatae Mariae Virginis and a plainsong mass setting in this open-air celebration of the Feast of the Blessed Virgin Mary in one of NYC’s most hidden of secret gardens. St John’s Colony Garden, open to the public only once a year in the middle of August, contains an open-air Altar and is the site of this yearly celebration on the Eve of the Assumption. Fr Graeme Napier, Rector of St John’s, presides. Professor Lawrence Harris directs.

This is an Episcopal Church Eucharist to which those of all faiths and of none are welcome.  It is followed by a sparkling wine reception in St Benedict’s Courtyard Garden. That reception is followed by a 7.30pm concert of settings of the ancient prayer Ave Maria and other Marian texts in St John’s Church.  (http://www.stjvny.org/arts-at-st-johns-july)

Entrance (please enter before 6pm) is via the Horsewalk adjacent to 224 W 11th St.

The event is, of course, free and open to all, but registration is helpful for catering purposes.
