Back Before Bach

March 10 @ 7:30 pm - 9:30 pm

$29 – $49

Piffaro surveys the formative influence of two centuries of wind band instruments and music on Johann Sebastian Bach’s musical training and compositional output.

Two hymns illustrate the foundation that Bach built on: Christ ist erstanden and A solis ortus. We will trace the evolution of each from ancient anonymous settings, through versions by various German masters from the 15th-17th centuries, before arriving at Bach’s glorious chorales. The concert program will also include the experiments in chromaticism and early German songs and dances that provided Bach such a rich vocabulary to draw upon.

Playlist: Sacred polyphony by Heinrich Isaac, Stephen Mahu, Johann Walther, Samuel Scheidt, and Michael Praetorius; virtuosic instrumental displays on a popular tunes by Jakob Obrecht, Antoine Brumel and Ludwig Senfl; courageous ventures into chromaticism by Orlande de Lassus and Jakob Handl; popular dances of the day from the allemande to the volta; and chorales by J. S. Bach.
