Early Music Youth Academy (Seattle, WA)
Shulamit Kleinerman, Director
Devoted for several years to the joys of Renaissance chamber music, in autumn 2019 EMYA explored the innovations of early Baroque style through the career of Salamone Rossi. Present-day musicians encountering the earliest Baroque repertoire more commonly have to look backward to it from the familiar music of the late Baroque. But EMYA’s musicians came to this repertoire after playing 16th-century Renaissance consort music together for five seasons. With this shared stylistic background, our players experienced the innovations in Salamone Rossi’s music as if they were unfolding in real time. Reading through each new piece, students and teacher alike never knew when to expect the elegant old symmetries and when instead we’d be carried away in delighted surprise by the elastic energy of Rossi’s evolving harmonic language.
