In Love with Viola: d’Amore & da Gamba

June 1 @ 7:30 pm - 9:00 pm EDT

$25

In Love with Viola: d’Amore & da Gamba will feature violist Dan McCarthy & violist da gamba Arnie Tanimoto, who will serenade the listener with the rich viola sounds of different types of “violas,” along with charming commentary. McCarthy will perform the music of Atilio Ariosti on one of the most interesting members of the viola family– the viola d’amore (“viola of love”), which has seven strings and an additional seven sympathetic strings. Tanimoto will be playing the music of Bach on the 6-string viola da gamba (“viola of the leg”). Keyboardist Marc Bellassai will be the accompanist. 7:30pm Shrine of Ss. Peter and Paul, 125 Fayette Street, Cumberland, Maryland.

As with all Mountainside Baroque performances, Baroque-style instruments, both strings and winds, offer an exciting and sonorous window into the music of that time. The June concerts will also mark the first appearance of the new Mountainside Baroque digital chamber organ. Mountainside is grateful to Allegany County’s Local Development Council (Rocky Gap distribution) for funding its purchase. Come and see the latest!
