Ensemble 44 presents: Jonah and the Whale, a concert of early music on the subject of sea life and the biblical tale of Jonah and the Whale. Elisabeth Jacquet de la Guerre’s cantata Jonas is framed with sonatas by Isabella Leonarda and sea songs by English composers John Dowland, Thomas Ravenscroft, and others.
Ensemble 44 was born of a wish to explore the works of Baroque women composers. The group has released two CD’s so far. The first, Six by Three, contains works of Jacquet de la Guerre, von Preussen, and Leonarda; and Music of Ladies of the French and Italian Baroque features works of Strozzi, Leonarda, and Jacquet de la Guerre.
