Mary Springfels: Chasing the Good Lai—Machaut’s Lai de la fontaine
February 13 @ 1:00 pm - 2:15 pm PST
$25
The Lai de la Fonteinne is one of the very few long medieval pieces to become part of our modern repertoire. The Lai was composed some time around 1340 by the greatest composer of the century, Guillaume de Machaut (c1300-1377). It consists of 12 stanzas dedicated to the Virgin. Every other stanza is a canon, or chace, and these six pieces are marvels of intricacy and haunting beauty. As it happens, they are a perfect fit for the tenor viol. We will play the six chaces, explore Machaut’s musical language, and address rhythmic and technical challenges.
The class is open to singers, viol players, and medieval bowed or plucked strings.
