(Re)discover baroque Germany’s favorite composer, Georg Philipp Telemann (1681-1767), through ear-opening performances by Philadelphia Baroque Orchestra Tempesta di Mare. Fire & Invention includes two grand, pull-out-all-the-stops concertos for orchestra, and the modern premiere of new-found Entr’actes by Telemann, all written for the finest band of his day, the Dresden Hofkapelle (now the Dresden Staatskapelle). Tempesta will perform with a thirty-one piece orchestra, including horns, a double set of winds, expanded strings, continuo and timpani, that approaches the size of the Dresden orchestra—huge in baroque terms!
Throughout its fifteen-year history, Tempesta di Mare has championed rediscoveries alongside established repertoire. With performances of over 30 modern “world premieres” of lost or forgotten baroque masterpieces, the Inquirer describe it as “an old-music group that acts like a new-music group, by pushing the cutting edge back rather than forward.” In Fire & Invention the unconducted ensemble will showcase Telemann’s unparalleled variety of character, nuance, melody and joie-de-vivre.
