“The Musicology of Gullah Geechee Culture”; EMSI Musicology Forum with Ron Daise

Presented as part of USC’s Musicology Forum hosted by the Early Modern Studies Institute 2020-2021 Early Music Series in partnership with EMA, South Carolina performer and scholar Ron Daise (Brookgreen Gardens) will offer an historical study of Gullah Geechee culture and heritage through the following musical elements: Pitch – the origin of spirituals, work songs, and shanties; Rhythm – Gullah Geechee language and African Diasporic linguistic connections; Tempo – generational acceptance and understanding; and Texture – beliefs, values, and traditions.
