the Program:\nDemand for the harpsichord and its music continued througho
ut much of the late 18th\ncentury\, even during critical moments in the de
velopment of the fortepiano. Although the\nemerging fortepiano offered ent
icing modes of expression and timbre\, there was not a\nsudden turn of fav
or for one instrument over the other. In fact\, as the century progressed\
,\nkeyboard music up through the time of Mozart\, frequently deferred the
choice of\ninstrument to the player. In Potsdam\, at Frederick the Great
’s jewel-like Sans Souci palace\,\nit was a fortepiano which beckoned th
e attention of J.S. Bach during a visit with his son Carl\nPhilipp Emanuel
. Double keyboard concertos by French composer Jean-François Tapray\nwere
written intentionally to juxtapose the intrinsic qualities of the fortepi
ano and\nharpsichord. At the crossroads of rivalry and musical compatibili
ty\, the duo concertos of\nTapray &amp\; Bach are a delightful joust betwe
en ancient and modern. The result is a friendly\ncompetition in virtuosity
which equally celebrates the soundscape of both instruments and\nembraces
the endless variety of color and contrast brought by quills and hammers.\
