SUMMARY:Metal and Gut: Two "Violas of Love"
DESCRIPTION:The Viola d’Amore was an instrument unique in timbre and reso
nance that evoked special emotions in operas and cantatas of the finest Ba
roque composers. With no uniform tuning or construction\, surviving exampl
es use anywhere from four to seven strings\, with as many as 21 “sympath
etic strings.” Two distinct versions of the instrument existed\, one wit
h bowed strings of gut\, and another using metal wire—the type originall
 y heard in J.S. Bach’s compositions. Multi-instrumentalist Daniel McCar
thy will showcase both instruments\, with Washington Bach Consort collabor
 ators David Ross\, Margot Rood\, and Marc Bellassai.\n\nDaniel McCarthy\
 , viola d’amore\nDavid Ross\, baroque flute\nMarc Bellassai\, harpsichor
