SUMMARY:Newton Baroque presents Tenebrae\, Paris 1703: Music by Michel Dela
 lande\, Marc-Antoine Charpentier\, and Sebastien Brossard
DESCRIPTION:The musical experience at church in Paris during Holy Week was 
 quite extraordinary. Opera was forbidden during Lent\, so all of the music
 al resources of the opera were available and utilized by the Parisian chur
 ches for Tenebrae services all through Holy Week. Tenebrae is a very drama
 tic service taking place in a darkened chapel and involved the gradual ext
 inguishing of 15 candles\, plunging the church into complete darkness. The
  ritual also included musical settings of the Lamentations of Jeremiah and
  settings of the 51st Psalm. This concert features Lamentations of Jeremia
 h by Marc-Antoine Charpentier\, and Sebastien Brossard as well as a richly
  beautiful 51st Psalm by Michel Delalande.\nJason McStoots - Tenor\, Teres
