SUMMARY:Stile Antico: The Prince of Music (Boston Early Music Festival
DESCRIPTION:\n\n\n\n\nStile Antico\n\n\nFRIDAY\, NOVEMBER 7\, 2025\n8pm |
 St. Paul Church\, Cambridge\nVIRTUAL PREMIERE: Saturday\, November 22\, 20
 25 at 8pm (ET)\nAvailable to watch until December 6\, 2025 at 11:59pm (ET)
\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Prince of Music: Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestr
ina\nStile Antico marks its 20th season by honoring the quincentenary of
the undisputed master of the style which gives the group its name: Giovan
ni Pierluigi da Palestrina. In an era when even the most celebrated compos
er could be forgotten in a single generation\, Palestrina was an emphatic
exception as his legend as “the prince and father of music” only grew
after his death. Palestrina’s stellar career was inextricably linked wit
h the Papacy and the great churches of Rome for which he composed. One of
the world’s most vibrant and expressive vocal ensembles\, the intensely
collaborative singers of Stile Antico explore the music Palestrina himself
would have sung at the Sistine Chapel\, the changes in his style demanded
by the Counter-Reformation\, his tragic personal life\, and his influence
on his successors. The repertoire is sumptuous\, including several of Pal
estrina’s most beloved and timeless motets\, gems by other leading compo
sers active in Rome\, and a new work by leading British composer Cheryl Fr
ances-Hoad\, written especially for Stile Antico and this program.\n\n\n\n
\n\n“A magnificent display of the very best kind of polyphonic music.”
 \n\n—BBC Music Magazine\n\n\n\n
