SUMMARY:The Other Mary: Celebrating the Dark-Skinned Divine Feminine
DESCRIPTION:For 2\,000 years\, the Virgin Mary has been a central represent
ation of the Divine Feminine. While modern mainstream art tends to portray
her through a Eurocentric lens\, history and music tell a broader story.
Across Europe\, Africa\, and the Americas\, in fact\, old artifacts and re
cords reveal a rich tradition of a dark-skinned ‘Other Mary.’\nLa Donn
a Musicale and Rumbarroco invite you to a vibrant celebration that honors
and reclaims her powerful presence. Our program weaves a rich tapestry of
sounds—from Spanish works of Early Music and modern Latin American world
premieres to the soulful traditional music of The Canary Islands\, Cuba\,
Peru\, and Venezuela. By blending a taste of the past with the driving\,
infectious rhythms of Afro-Latin traditions\, we bring Mary’s hidden his
tory to the forefront\, showing that dark-skinned divinities still resonat
 e strongly today.\nMusic from the Llibre Vermell de Montserrat\, Spain\, a
nd the Latin-American Valdensis and Trujillo Codex\, along with traditiona
l music from the Canary Islands\, Venezuela\, Mexico and Peru.\n\nENSEMBLE
 :\nAdriana Ruiz\, soprano\nCassandra Extavour\, soprano\nDaniela Tosic\, m
 ezzosoprano\nFausto Miro\, tenor\nNa’ama Lion\, flute\nDanilo Bonina\, v
 iolin\nEduardo Betancourt\, Venezuelan harp &amp\; percussion\nKirsten Lam

 utiérrez\, viola da gamba &amp\; cuatro\n\nAbout the Ensembles:\nLa Donna
Musicale is a non-profit organization dedicated to the research and perfo

s focus on Ibero-American early music and "Latin-Baroque Fusion\," blendin
g European traditions with African and Amerindian influences. Both groups
are directed by Laury Gutiérrez\, whose research into marginalized musica
l histories is central to their shared repertoire.\n\nBoth groups are foun
ded and directed by Laury Gutiérrez\, a Venezuelan-American scholar and "
first-rate" instrumentalist (Boston Globe). A prominent figure in the fiel
d of historical performance\, Ms. Gutiérrez has served as a Radcliffe Fel
low at Harvard University and as a resident scholar at the Brandeis Univer
sity Women's Studies Research Center. Her extensive research into marginal
ized musical histories is central to the shared repertoire of both ensembl
