Under the patronage of the d’Este family, the city of Ferrara emerged as a vital cultural and intellectual center during the Italian Renaissance, attracting leading poets, artists, philosophers, and musicians. The finest composers and performers of the day had at least some degree of connection to Ferrara, and music – especially the wind band – played a central role in the city’s rich artistic environment. Piffaro’s wind players present a program that explores the distinctive soundscape of Ferrara, from their own Piffari’s Casanatense manuscript to the tide-shifting works of Cipriano and Gesualdo.
