Mysterium Duo, Sir N. Antonio Peruch and Penny Sanborn, presents Harmonic Breath: The Music of Palestrina, a new album bringing the sacred masterpieces of Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina (c.1525–1594) to life through adaptations for two free-bass accordions.
This collection of nine carefully curated works highlights the clarity, balance, and spiritual depth of Palestrina’s polyphony, while revealing new expressive possibilities unique to the accordion duo. The arrangements respect the original modal structures and contrapuntal clarity, offering both concert audiences and early music enthusiasts a fresh perspective on these Renaissance masterpieces.
Widely regarded as the greatest composer of late Renaissance sacred music, Palestrina’s influence extended to composers including J.S. Bach, who studied his motets as exemplars of perfect polyphonic writing. This recording preserves the integrity of the original music while exploring the rich breath, resonance, and harmonic colours made possible by two accordions.
