The Washington Township Historical Society (WTHS) invites the community to step back in time with “1776 — The News Reaches German Valley,” a unique, entertaining and immersive living history event commemorating the 250th anniversary of the nation’s founding.

The year is 1776. The Declaration has been signed in Philadelphia—and the news has just arrived in German Valley.

Residents gather at the historic Union Church. Uncertainty fills the air.

What would it feel like to suddenly hear that America had declared independence from Britain?

Is it a cause for celebration… or concern?
What will independence mean for family, livelihood, and future?

Guests will have the opportunity to assume the roles of local residents — farmers, widows, soldiers, merchants, and others — and join in the conversations, questions, and uncertainty surrounding independence.

No costumes are required — just come ready to experience history in a whole new way.

This program is designed to make history personal, yet fun and lively. It allows participants to experience the uncertainty and decision- making that defined everyday life at the start of the American Revolution.

The evening will feature:

  • Live authentic period music (Flutes, including two original 200+ year old flutes, Recorders, Whistles, Fife, Violin, Cello)
  • Delicious appetizers with local cheeses, cold meats, veggies, fruit and more
  • Local wines, beer, cider and other beverages
  • An interactive atmosphere on the grounds of the 250-year-old Stone Church

Parking is available at Zion Lutheran Church, 11 Schooley’s Mountain Road, Long Valley.
