Traverso Practice Net is delighted to present The Quantz’s Solfeggi Practice Map, a new free Practice Pill that turns the 94-page Amadeus edition of the collection into an interactive resource for historical flute practice.
With their wealth of exercises, musical excerpts and practical annotations, the Solfeggi offer a unique window onto eighteenth-century flute pedagogy—a world in which technique, musical expression and stylistic understanding were inseparable. Yet this exceptional source can be difficult to approach.
At the centre of the new resource is the Solfeggi Map, an original way into this wealth of material. It reveals what each page contains and allows players to explore the collection by practice focus—from articulation, fingerwork and breath to dance style, phrasing and repertoire—finding material relevant to their own technical or musical needs.
A complementary Subject Finder, based on the index of the Amadeus edition, provides another way into the collection: users can select a topic, find the pages on which it appears and open them directly in the Map.
The resource also connects with historical flautist Anna Reichhold’s ongoing exploration of the Copenhagen manuscript and its annotations on articulation, tempo, affect, ornamentation and performance. Her recordings allow players to hear selected passages and follow the historical annotations in practice.
The result is a practical and engaging way for students, performers and teachers to explore an exceptional source of eighteenth-century flute pedagogy as living material for today’s practice room.
