This program investigates the complex musical hybridity that emerged in Colonial Mexico, where European liturgical and secular traditions intersected with Indigenous musical practices amidst conditions of colonization. The repertoire reflects dynamics of cultural negotiation, power relations, and resistance, revealing a multifaceted soundscape shaped by adaptation and survival. Piffaro’s wind players, alongside guest vocalists, plucked strings, and percussionists, engage with this repertoire to illuminate the sonic textures of early colonial society. The Friday performance at Teatro Esperanza includes a collaboration with the Aztec dancers of Ollin Yoliztli Calmecac.
