The second half of Early Music Missouri’s 2025–2026 season opens with a program of English music from the late 16th and early 17th centuries by Orlando Gibbons and William Byrd. The viola da gamba holds a special place in English musical culture and some of the most sublime music for the viol consort came from the pens of Gibbons and Byrd. The concert features instrumental works for various combinations of violas da gamba as well as consort songs that combine solo and ensemble voices with the viol consort, including solo secular songs and a liturgical anthem for vocal soloists, choral ensemble and viol consort.
In line with its mission to bring regional and local musicians to our stage, Early Music Missouri is pleased to welcome Alchymy Viols to our Mainstage series. One of North America’s premiere viol consorts, Alchymy Viols has performed on concert series and at festivals across the country. Its individual members have decades of experience that includes international performance, recording and teaching credentials. The ensemble is based in Indiana and its members—Wendy Gillespie, Joanna Blendult, Erica Rubis and Philip Spray—have strong professional connections to the famed Historical Practice Program at Indiana University’s Jacobs School of Music. Alchymy Viols will be joined for this concert by Stephanie Hunt, viola da gamba, David Sinden, organ, and a vocal ensemble including soprano soloists Samantha Arten and Arianna Aerie.
The concert will take place on January 25 at 3:00 PM at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, 110 North Warson Road in Ladue, MO. The free off-street parking, available immediately adjacent to the church, includes multiple handicapped spots. The performance space is accessible for those with special mobility needs. Admission to the concert is $20 (cash, card, or check) at the door with special discounts for students.
