Program: Les Mademoiselles Jefferson
Thomas Jefferson is remembered as one of America’s greatest statesmen. Less well-known, perhaps, is his love of music and the encouragement he gave his daughters, Martha and Maria, to develop their skills on the harpsichord. While stationed in Paris, Martha and Maria attended the Abbaye Royale de Panthemont and studied with the renowned virtuoso Claude Balbastre, organist at Notre Dame and Saint-Roch. Balbastre’s Pieces de Clavecin traveled home with the ladies, copied by hand in a handsome bound volume with a green leather cover entitled Mademoiselle Jefferson L’abbaye Royale de Panthemont.
