Dancing the Lyra Way!
Niccolo Seligmann & Lisa Terry ~ lyra viols
Yumiko Niimi & Carlos Fittante ~ dancers
Lyra Way performs repertoire for two bass viols played “lyra way” by 17th-century English composers Tobias Hume, Thomas Ford, and Alfonso Ferrabosco II. Each player provides chordal accompaniment or melody in turn, creating exquisite polyphony. Artists from the BALAM Dance Theatre, Carlos Fittante and Yumiko Niimi, will interpret the dance pieces as solos and duets, exploring their own polyphony.
Niccolo Seligmann is currently the most widely-heard medieval fiddler in the world, performing with Alkemie, The Broken Consort, Concordian Dawn, Eya, Hesperus, and Wherligig. Lisa Terry is a member of Parthenia Viol Consort and is principal cellist of Tempesta di Mare. Yumiko Niimi is a principal dancer with BALAM Dance Theatre and Carlos Fittante is Artistic Director of BALAM Dance Theatre.
