The musical experience at church in Paris during Holy Week was quite extraordinary. Opera was forbidden during Lent, so all of the musical resources of the opera were available and utilized by the Parisian churches for Tenebrae services all through Holy Week. Tenebrae is a very dramatic service taking place in a darkened chapel and involved the gradual extinguishing of 15 candles, plunging the church into complete darkness. The ritual also included musical settings of the Lamentations of Jeremiah and settings of the 51st Psalm.
This concert features Lamentations of Jeremiah by Marc-Antoine Charpentier, and Sebastien Brossard as well as a richly beautiful 51st Psalm by Michel Delalande.

Jason McStoots – Tenor, Teresa Wakim – Soprano, Laura Jeppesen – Viola da gamba, Andrus Madsen – Keyboard
