Road Scholar National Recorder / Early Music Workshop

Enhance your technique and ensemble playing during an intensive workshop with directors Letitia Berlin & Lawrence Lipnik, plus other stellar faculty.

Recorder and viol technique classes geared toward application of technique practice to the repertoire – making music out of notes! Master class and consort classes.

Location The workshop takes place at the Hidden Valley Music Seminars, An Institute of the Arts in Carmel Valley, California, nestled amongst oak and buckeye trees below majestic hillsides. Along with our rich opportunities for music making, bird watching and walking can be enjoyed nearby.

Schedule The workshop includes four daily classes, morning stretching, and impromptu group playing. Wednesday includes a free afternoon to explore the beautiful Carmel/Monterey area, play music, or just relax!

– Evening tutti playing sessions – all welcome (in addition to recorders and viols, bring your krummhorns and other reed instruments if you have them)

– Evening playing sessions, led by YOU! Bring your favorite pieces and be a conductor for an evening!

– Faculty Concert on Thursday evening

– Student Concert on Friday before dinner

– Open Mic on Friday after dinner

– Happy Hour every day

Instrument Information/Level The Road Scholar Recorder/Early Music Workshop is open to adult recorder and viol players of all ages who play at intermediate to advanced levels. Recorder players must be able to play at least one F instrument and one C instrument. All participants must bring their own instruments. Week #2, November 1, 2026 program includes dulcian and shawm. The dulcian and shawm programs are open by audition. Please contact the workshop director at tishberlin@sbcglobal.net to arrange an online audition.

Registration It is Road Scholar policy that all programs will be closed to enrollment 35 days before they start. This means that you MUST register for the Early Music Workshop week #1 through Road Scholar by Saturday September 19, 2026.
