Roanoque Baroque presents its fourth season, An Italian Adventure, in the north of Italy with a program focusing on solo violins (six of them!) and voice and the music of Antonio Vivaldi.

The program opens with the lovely Sinfonia For Strings (which may be by Vivaldi or a contemporary lesser known composer Johann Gottlieb Janitsch) and an early concerto for four solo violins. These solos will be played by the violinists of the orchestra. Interestingly, this concerto was later transcribed by none other than J.S. Bach as a concerto for 4 Harpsichords.

Soprano soloist Adelaide Trombetta will be featured in the dramatic motet ‘In furore iustissimae irae’ for voice and strings.

The concluding musical fireworks of the program will feature:

  • guest violinist Alexandra Calabrio from New York in Vivaldi’s Concerto for Violin in D Minor, and
  • a collaborative performance with five violin soloists from the orchestra as they share in the variations of the famous version of “La Folia” by Vivaldi.

Finally, the program includes Roanoke’s newest string instrument, a theorbo. This Baroque instrument was custom made for Roanoque Baroque by the Brazilian luthier, Luciano Fario.
