CHICAGO—Haymarket Opera Company (HOC) continues to stream the splendor of baroque opera online throughout its 10th anniversary season. After its highly-praised opening filmed opera Acis and Galatea, “a superb document of a Handel opera” (Chicago Tribune), the season continues March 5-14, 2021 with a filmed performance of Handel’s Apollo e Dafne. The astonishing beauty of Handel’s music has made Apollo e Dafne one of his greatest hits.

The dynamic duo soprano Erica Schuller and baritone Ryan de Ryke, known to Haymarket audiences for their show-stopping performances in Telemann’s Pimpinone, create the roles of Daphne and Apollo in Handel’s youthful masterpiece. Schuller’s burnished soprano “easily wins our hearts with her infectious goodness, winning smile, and gorgeous tone” (Stage and Cinema) and De Ryke’s “supple, refined baritone” (Chicago Classical Review) is the ultimate match for the virtuosic demands of Handel’s Apollo.

Amid the disruption of the global pandemic, HOC emerged as an early innovator with its “luscious production” (Hyde Park Herald) of Handel’s Acis and Galatea presented on film in October 2020. The Chicago Tribune reported that “18th-century opera found a new home in 21st-century technology.”

The same creative and production team responsible for HOC’s well received 2020 Acis and Galatea are behind this new production. Filmed at Chicago’s Resolution Studios, Creative Producer Chase Hopkins is again joined by film director Garry Grasinski, Grammy-nominated audio engineer Mary Mazurek, lighting designer Linsey Lyddan, and Chicago artist Zuleyka V. Benitez, whose original scenic artwork is projected throughout. The Haymarket Opera Orchestra is led by HOC Founder Craig Trompeter

Haymarket’s Acis and Galatea (which premiered in October 2020) will be available for online viewing March 5-14, 2021, alongside the debut of Haymarket’s second film, Apollo e Dafne. Audiences have the special opportunity to enjoy this Handelian double bill with packaged tickets at a 20% discount.
