Biography
Greta Haug-Hryciw had her initial recorder ensemble experience with the San Francisco branch of the New York Recorder Workshop in the early '70s. She co-directs the Barbary Coast Recorder Orchestra (BCRO) with Glen Shannon, and is an honorary assistant director of the Mid-Peninsula Recorder Orchestra (MPRO) with Frederic Palmer. A San Francisco native with musical roots in the San Francisco Bay Area classical and early music scenes that span three generations, Greta enjoys having an active role in the recorder community, whether behind the scenes producing local events, or performing in music projects. She has conducted ARS chapter meetings for Seattle WA, Portland OR, Dallas TX, Rochester NY, Raleigh NC, Philadelphia PA, Orange CA, Atlanta GA, NAVRS, and for the four San Francisco Bay Area chapters, as well as numerous one-day workshops. She is assistant director of the SFEMS Summer Recorder Workshop with Annette Bauer.
Greta is a founding member of the San Francisco-based recorder ensemble SDQ, coaches ensembles and students of all ages, and is the Director of Patron Services for the highly acclaimed non-profit musical arts organization Voices of Music. Greta heads VoM’s After-School Recorder program during the school year, and with director Hanneke van Proosdij, co-teaches the Junior Recorder Society. Greta served two terms on the ARS Board of Directors rolling off the board last September.
Greta and her husband Lloyd live near the edge of the Pacific Ocean on the San Mateo County coast between San Francisco and Half Moon Bay.
