Biography

Teddie Hwang is a flutist and educator specializing in historical flutes. Trained first in classical music, she is drawn to the timbre and vocal qualities of the traverso. Based in Germany, she performs with a variety of ensembles in repertoire ranging from 17th-century airs de cour to 19th-century symphonies. She is the founder of "Teddie Talks Traverso," an online learning platform for period flute playing. She has given workshops at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, the University of Victoria School of Music, the Irish World Academy of Music and Dance at the University of Limerick, Tunghai University in Taiwan, and the Escuela Superior de Música (UNAM) in Mexico City.

Teddie studied traverso with Wilbert Hazelzet and earned her Master’s degree in Historical Flute Performance at the Koninklijk Conservatorium in The Hague. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Music and Germanic Studies from Indiana University, where she graduated with high distinction. She also credits Kathryn Lukas (modern flute) and Barbara Kallaur (baroque flute) with shaping her musical development. She currently chairs the National Flute Association’s Historical Flutes Committee and is a past winner of its Baroque Flute Artist Competition.

Alongside her musical work, Teddie is a photographer and art filmmaker who explores how the essence of music can be expressed visually. She studied photography with award-winning photojournalist David Bathgate and black-and-white techniques with Memphis Barbree, and has exhibited in group shows with the Wallauer Fachwerk e.V. in the Frankfurt area and in Alsace, France. A member of DarkSky International, she draws inspiration from the night sky and curates concert programs featuring her own astrophotography.

A lover of languages, Teddie is fluent in English, German, and Chinese. She is partial to playing at A=392 and is fascinated by the fisheye lens.
