Baroque Chamber Orchestra wishes to share the good news that we have been approved for a National Endowment for the Arts award of $10,000 from the Grants for Arts Projects. This is to support our January, 2023 production of La Purpura de la Rosa/The Blood of The Rose, the first opera composed in the Americas (Lima, Peru 1701).

“We are thrilled to receive this national recognition. I have been looking forward to producing this opera for years because of its historical significance and its lively retelling of a timeless love story. We honor Colorado’s rich cultural heritage with this Spanish language opera, in what may be a Colorado premiere,” said Frank Nowell, Artistic Director.

We are pleased to have Nell Snaidas, an expert in this genre of Latin American music, as guest director. American-Uruguayan soprano, Nell’s award-winning programs have been called “revelatory” (BBC Music Magazine), and “innovative and brilliant” (Cool Cleveland). More at https://www.nellsnaidas.com. The orchestra will also be joined by a stellar cast of local and international guest artists, featuring Grammy winner Jennifer Ellis Kampani.

“The Baroque Chamber Orchestra of Colorado… has built a national reputation as a first-rate period-instrument ensemble.” said Early Music America’s EMAg feature article. More about BCOC at https://www.bcocolorado.org

“The National Endowment for the Arts is proud to support arts and cultural organizations throughout the nation with these grants, including Baroque Chamber Orchestra of Colorado, providing opportunities for all of us to live artful lives,” said NEA Chair Maria Rosario Jackson, PhD. “The arts contribute to our individual well-being, the well-being of our communities, and to our local economies. The arts are also crucial to helping us make sense of our circumstances from different perspectives as we emerge from the pandemic and plan for a shared new normal informed by our examined experience.”
