On the formation of a new ensemble dedicated to baroque sacred music

Musica Transalpina – a new, professional ensemble dedicated exclusively to baroque sacred music – is officially launching on Sunday, August 27 2023 at 3 P. M. at St. Mark’s Presbyterian Church in Newport Beach, California (2200 San Joaquin Hills Road, Newport Beach, CA 92660).

For this inaugural concert, we have programmed absolutely enormous compositions in the so-called “Colossal Baroque” style by Muffat, Biber, Kerll, and other composers who worked at Salzburg Cathedral during the 17th century.  Performances of 17th-century music are rare enough, and groups that focus on the repertoire of this era tend to be small chamber groups.  What makes us unique is that we focus on large-scale ceremonial music from the 17th century, for both voices and instruments.  Indeed, the vast majority of the music we perform is seeing its American première under our direction, and our mission is to make Los Angeles the leading city for early music in the nation by bringing world-class performances of the magnificent but under-performed liturgical music of the baroque to the United States.
