About

Founded in 1984, Portland Baroque Orchestra is one of the largest period performance orchestra in the United States. PBO specializes in works of the Baroque and Classical eras, but also explores the musical world outside of those time constraints, performing with period instruments or replicas of instruments that were available when the music was composed. The orchestra thrives on spontaneity, playfulness, and extraordinary artistry.

In December 2022 PBO concluded an international search for a new Artistic Director, hiring conductor and keyboardist Julian Perkins as part of Fall 2022’s Festival of Candidates. Julian replaces trailblazing Artistic Director Monica Huggett who helmed the ensemble for 27 years. The 2023-24 Season is PBO's 40th Anniverary.

PBO is a respected and active collaborator, with a long track record of catalyzing the arts community; launching the Great Arts. Period. initiative during the 2020 COVID live event ban, a free digital concert hall that filimed and released new programs and assisted other small non-profits to do the same at well below market rates. PBO was also a primary author of the Arts for All program that provides $5 tickets for those experiencing low-incomes.
