Tempesta Talks: Telemann’s Quixote Suite

TELEMANN’S QUIXOTE SUITE: AN UNDER-THE-HOOD LOOK AT COMPOSING DEPICTIVE MUSIC

How can orchestral music depict Don Quixote tilting at windmills? Sancho Panza being tossed in a blanket? Quixote’s swaggering pride, or the bucking gait of Sancho’s mule? It’s a collaboration between the composer, who writes the musical script, and the orchestra itself, which delivers that script in performance.

In the first installment of the Tempesta Talk series, Tempesta di Mare’s Co-Directors Gwyn Roberts and Richard Stone take you on a backstage tour of both sides of this process, showing the depictive elements that Telemann built into the score of his Don Quixote Suite, and how our orchestra brings those dramatic ingredients to life in performance.
