“Where Music Is,
No Evil Thing Can Be”
Spanish Influence
in the 16th and 17th Centuries
Spoken by Don Quijote’s sidekick Sancho Panza, the title of our final program is drawn from Miguel de Cervantes’ famous novel and reflects his appreciation of music. While Don Quiote’s musical skills were little better than his knightly talents, the novel, like Spain, is full of people singing, dancing and playing. Musicke’s Cordes’ season finale starts with music from Renaissance Spain but expands to see how Spain’s music ranged across borders, mountains and even oceans.
From Spanish ricercars to New World ciaconnas, from French chaconnes to Austrian passacaglias, this concert offers a glimpse at the reach of Iberian music across Europe in the 16th and 17th centuries.
