This course introduces beginner to intermediate transverse flute players to the four main dances of the baroque suite – Allemande, Courante, Sarabande, and Gigue. Players will learn the basic characteristics of each dance, including tempo, rhythm, and affect, and how these elements influence musical interpretation. Emphasis is placed on practical aspects of playing such as phrasing, articulation, sound production, and the treatment of inequality. We will also examine what are the common technical challenges in each of these dances and learn how to overcome them. Through listening, guided practice, and examining various examples of each dance form, players will gain confidence in playing these dances with stylistic awareness and musical expression on the transverse flute.
