About

Music City Baroque is Nashville’s premier period instrument ensemble and the only professional historically-informed performing organization in Tennessee.

In sharing the music from the 17th and 18th centuries with all the colors, stylistic sensitivities, and emotional expressions of the time, we strive to make a valuable contribution to the arts and to the understanding of human expression throughout time.

We are committed to culturally informed performance practices not only by reflecting the musical practices of the time, but also by considering the circumstances that led to prominence of some musicians while it failed to recognize others.

We are committed to widening the scope of the traditional engagement with the music of the Baroque, and we seek to include of music and musicians in order to speak to the full spectrum of the human experience. This, indeed, was one of the innovations that characterized the Baroque movement: a novel style of music that spoke to and expresses the complex and sensitive world of human emotions.

Music City Baroque is a 501(c) organization and has been providing concerts to the Nashville community since 2005, including ventures into video streaming during the pandemic. We have been recognized by critics for “extra-ordinary expression” and “grace, taste, and unfailing sensitivity”. Concerts in the recent past have featured women composers of the Baroque period, indigenous musicians and composers in Colonial Spanish America (at the Frist Art Museum), and our upcoming project (September 2024) will highlight the underlying influence of historical performance practice in numerous contemporary music genres.

Many of our performers are educators in public and private educational settings, and educational outreach is a major goal for us in upcoming seasons. We are uniquely positioned to connect our modern world of music to music and musicians who have gone before us.

With our distinct commitment to the incredible wealth of the Baroque repertoire we are making our own contribution to elevate Nashville as “Music City”.
