The Guiding Star: Pilgrimage Songs from Medieval Iberia

June 1 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm EDT

Free

Join us for a sumptuous musical journey to the Middle Ages with voices and historical instruments.

Allison Monroe, co-founder of Trobár and Director of the Five College Early Music Program, joins Early Music Michigan for an evening of music from the Llibre Vermell de Montserrat, the Codex Las Huelgas, and the Cantigas de Santa Maria. These manuscripts contain stirring songs and dances collected from pilgrims visiting the shrine of the Virgin of Montserrat and mesmerizing chants composed for the choir of nuns at the monastery of Santa María la Real de Las Huelgas.

These are some of the most popular and frequently recorded pieces of early music, with timeless appeal. Join Early Music Michigan and guests at beautiful St. Augustine Cathedral in Kalamazoo for a free concert to celebrate EMM’s return and the joyful spirit of these ancient songs.
